I've used this scraper on six window frames, and it is comfortable to use and effective at removal. These are basement windows, so the frames are very basic. The scraper would not be much good on something fancier because of the width of the blade. That said, the cheapo paint scrapers that use softer steel and screech like banshees hold nothing over this tool. It is much easier to avoid damage to the wood with this tool than with the cheapo versions because the paint is literally cracking under the edge and comes spitting off. (At least on my windows, which must have 8 or 9 coats on them). The pull knob makes so much sense it is unbelievable that any other design has ever been used. I suppose on a ladder it works better to use one hand. (The knob can be removed.)
Disclaimer: it will not get everything off every time! I did have to resort other methods on large flat areas that had no sharp edge for the blade to bite into, or were very uneven underneath. Perhaps I just ran out of patience. For areas up to 3/4 width of the blade, this scraper is great. There is much less dust than sanding. I haven't tried it yet, but I'll bet this would be effective at removing varnish as well. I used to know a guy that used cut glass to do the same thing. (This is not a safe practice.)
The blades are more expensive, of course, but do last longer. I don't know about the 10-1 quote from the manufacturer, because I immediately relegated my el cheapo to be a loaner after the first pass and didn't do a direct comparison. I went through two double-sided blades to do the six windows inside and out. A fresh edge is very noticeable. I went out today and picked up a diamond knife sharpener for fifteen and managed to get the blade edges back to near-shaving quality in ten minutes. Pick up an extra blade or two when you purchase the Hyde, because I've had trouble locating them at local stores.
The lack of hideous noise alone makes the Hyde worth every penny. The well designed handle and pull make it easy to use and control. I took off a star because the Phillips head screw that holds the blade on is a very soft metal and will need to be replaced soon. I'm looking around for a stainless replacement. Why the manuf. would skimp on this "moving" part is beyond me.
Another disclaimer: no product in the WORLD will make you enjoy scraping paint. Don't expect miracles.
